Enrico Zini, Debian Stories – 18th August 2009

This month’s talk will be given by Debian Developer, Enrico Zini.

In his own words: “I like to tell stories and I have stories to tell. I will start by covering the recent Debian Conference in Cáceres (Extremadura, Spain), and from there I will continue with stories about Debian, and about how Debian is being used in interesting ways.”

The meeting will take place at the usual time, 7pm, at the Lass O’Gowrie pub on Charles Street in Central Manchester. We will be located in the Salmon Room upstairs, although there will be people around a little earlier downstairs. Just ask at the bar if you can’t find us. Steven Flower, Plings (Places to Go, Things to Do) – 19th May

Substance, a local cooperative, are working to free local government and other data so that the information can get to the people who really need it. The project is called Plings and Steven Flower will be talking about about their experiences over the past two years and their plans for the next two years. Free software and freedom of data are the goals – but they have to jump through and negotiate a few hoops along the way!

As normal, there will be people around a little earlier (probably sampling the food and drinks on offer). Des Gregory: green h consulting, a social venture using free software – 21st April

This month’s talk be given by Des Gregory from green h, a with-permission-free-franchise-social-enterprise based in Manchester. They sell low cost, reconditioned computers to communities, schools and small businesses (to name but a few), earning money for Ubuntu ‘techies’ in the process.

Chris Maiden and James Panton, What you don’t get for free: the cost of building a Drupal site – 17th Feb

At our February meeting there will be a talk by Chris Maiden and James Panton, from NWDUG, entitled ‘What you don’t get for free: the cost of building a Drupal site’. The talk will give an overview of the popular CMS and will discuss how best to invest your time and effort to get the most from the software.

In addition to this month’s main talk, we will also have a brief Lightning Presentation.
Ross Gardler will give a short insight into the work of OSS Watch, a public funded, Higher Education Advisory body for Free and Open Source Software.

There is a different location this month, the BBC building on Oxford Road. Access is via the front entrance (including disabled access), where someone will meet you in the reception area.

As usual the talk will start at 7pm, although people will be around from 6.30pm, and it will end around 8.30pm followed by networking and socialising. There will be refreshments available and we will have access to the BBC bar.

Where possible we need to know in advance the names of people who will be there (it’s a secure building), so if you think you will be coming please email team@manchester.fsuk.org.

Ian Lynch, Setting up and sustaining a global FOSS-based business – 20th January

To start off the new year we have Ian Lynch from The Learning Machine Ltd (TLM), who are creators of the Ingots qualification, which is an officially recognised qualification in the UK and around the world. Ian will be talking about how to set up and sustain a global FOSS-based business. This talk may also be of interest to people wanting to improve IT teaching or qualifications in schools.

Christmas Social – 16th December

It’s party season and Manchester Free Software is going to celebrate with a social event. We’ve been around for a year now and this is a great opportunity to say hi to everyone. There will also be free mince pies!

Starting at the MDDA as usual, we will move on to FAB (or the Christmas markets or somewhere) later in the evening, after 8pm.

Additionally, if people are interested there will be an informal keysigning party.

Elmar Geese, The Value of Free Software – 18th Nov

This month we have an exciting talk from a very special guest. Elmar Geese is coming all the way from Germany to give a talk entitled “The Value of Free Software and how it changes Society, Economy and
Business”. Elmar is the founder & CEO of a free software company called tarent, founded in 1996. tarent has around 60 employees and is growing. He is also the chairperson of the German Linux Association (LIVE), an organisation of companies and people doing Open Source and Free Software Business with around 200 members, and the speaker for OBOOE, an European Open Source Business Network with members from 8+ countries.

Openmoko and stuff – 28th October

On Tuesday 28th October some of our members, Michael, Tim and Enrico, will be giving a talk and demonstration of the new Neo FreeRunner from Openmoko. All three members are keen users and advocates of the phone and are looking forward to showing that it can not only make phone calls but can do a lot more besides. The phone was released on 25th June 2008 and uses only free software. Their talk will cover the phone itself, the OS and the various toolkits and applications available for it.

There should still be time for some lightning talks afterwards. Simon will be giving a short presentation about the results of the Open Street Map Manchester Mapping Party. If anyone else wants to give a short talk as well they are more than welcome.

Dave Crossland, Free as in Profit (Fonts and Software Freedom) – 16th September

On Tuesday 16th of September, Dave Crossland will be talking about software freedom in the typography world.

In the talk entitled ‘Free as in profit (fonts and software freedom)’, Dave will discuss the importance of fonts within free software. Speaking about how fonts count as free software and how to contribute to existing free fonts, as well as how to make your own. The talk will cover many important issues within free software, including trademarks, patents and copyright.

Mick Fuzz, Free Space Manchester – 19th August

Are you interested in finding out how free software is really making a difference to people in Manchester? Well, Mick Fuzz from the Zion Arts Centre, will be talking about the Free Space Manchester project, which is providing young people in Hulme with free (in both senses of the word!) access to GNU/Linux computers.

Free Space Manchester is a new project, which has used LTSP to give new life to a cluster of old PCs, in an on going initiative to provide disadvantaged young people with computing and internet access. The group’s future aims include setting up an audio and video editing suite using free software.
